Greetings Vondelingers Well, that was quite a world cup! My consumption of Vondeling wines definitely doubled during England’s games as we had to sit through those nerve-wracking performances. We were 22 minutes away from the final when Croatia got their equaliser in the semi-finals. So very heart breaking. But, back here the rains have been very good so far this winter. See the picture from April compared to a couple of days ago below.  A very dry dam, photographed in…

Julian's June Newsletter

Greetings Vondelingers   The last few weeks have brought some good rains and recorded rainfall on Vondeling was 100mm, which is the ten-year average here for May, so that is encouraging. Our wettest months are traditionally July and August, so fingers crossed. We are currently installing solar panels at Vondeling, which should cut our electricity cost by more than half. It’s been a difficult decision as one never really knows if, by this time next year, a more effective panel…

Julian's May News from Vondeling

Greetings Vondelingers I have just returned from Port Elizabeth, where I attended the “I Love PE Wine Show”. It was extremely busy and I was showing most of our range of wines including the Sweet Carolyn which costs R225 for a 500ml bottle. I warn people who want to taste it, that they will not be able to resist taking their purse out if they do sample this delicious offering. Of course, they don’t believe me and I love watching…
Enjoy the perfect Shiraz & Venison winter dinner, presented by Vondeling’s Senior Winemaker, Matthew Copeland, and the chefs from The Goose Roasters, Craig Cormack and Beau du Toit. For one night only, Matthew and the chef-duo will present a vertical tasting comprising a variety of very limited Shiraz styles and vintages from the Vondeling wine library, paired with venison canapés and followed by a gastronomic three-course wine dinner.  Seats are limited to 40 people to ensure an intimate dining experience in which…

Julian's April News from Vondeling

Hello Fellow Vondelingers! We are still praying for rain! But the forecast is predicting 25mm this weekend, so not converting to “The Whacky Raindance Religion” just yet. We finished picking on 23rd March (Cabernet Sauvignon). So 2018 was a long old season and the driest since records began. In the end we were approximately 20% down altogether on last year, but the winemakers seem quite excited by the quality. Proof will be in the pudding!

Harvest 2018

As I am writing, we are right in the middle of harvest. Although the drought has certainly affected the yield, the quality of the fruit harvested up to now has been very good. So far, we have picked Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Muscat de Frontignan, Grenache Blanc and Roussane. With regards to red cultivars, we have picked Pinotage for Rosé and for Bowwood, as well as one block of Merlot and one block of Shiraz. The next three weeks…

We welcome visitors from afar

Our guests from St Austel breweries On the marketing side, we have been very busy. Rupert St Aubyn and Simon Leschallas of Southern Wines (our British importers) were out for their annual visit. They arranged some excellent meetings and tastings and a memorable braai with Sheperd Neame and St Austel breweries, both very good customers. We also paid Johannesburg and Durban a visit for our agent’s trade shows and we received great feedback form all our customers.
