Julian's April News from Vondeling

Hello Fellow Vondelingers!

We are still praying for rain! But the forecast is predicting 25mm this weekend, so not converting to “The Whacky Raindance Religion” just yet.

We finished picking on 23rd March (Cabernet Sauvignon). So 2018 was a long old season and the driest since records began. In the end we were approximately 20% down altogether on last year, but the winemakers seem quite excited by the quality. Proof will be in the pudding!

Julian's January 2018 Newsletter

Happy New Year Fellow Vondelingers!

I hope 2018 turns out to be a cracking year.

Here on the farm, the harvest is late (surprising taking into account the hot and dry conditions), but we started picking yesterday. 5 tons of chardonnay for our bubbly Rurale (Methode Ancestral). It's quite a process to make as it involves perfect timing from Matthew. Read more on what makes Methode Ancestral so special here.

The picture of Matt the Winemaker’s “back-of-a-fag-packet” figures is of sugar readings taken in various vineyard blocks which gives us an idea of the premium time to pick, although we usually just go on taste. The other is a picture of Matt catching some relaxation time with Henry before harvest starts.

Vondeling Erica is renamed Monsonia

Monsonia 1 Small  Vondeling Monsonia 2015 Small   Pressing Small

The 2015 vintage of Vondeling flagship Rhone-style blend will be celebrating a new species of Paardeberg fynbos with a change in name from Erica to Monsonia.

Monsonia speciosa, is a rare and highly endangered flower indigenous to the Paardeberg. The common names include Butterfly Flower, Sambreeltjie, (little umbrella) and Slangblom (snake flower).

It’s named after Lady Anne Monson, great grandchild of King Charles II. Controversially, her first marriage was dissolved, due to the birth of an illegitimate child but she soon remarried Colonel George Monson of the Indian Military. She was known as a “remarkable lady botanist” and was instrumental in translating Linnaeus’s famous “Philosophia Botanica”. On her way to Calcutta, she visited the Cape of Good Hope and accompanied seasoned collector of South African plants, Carl Peter Thunberg, on several expeditions around the Cape. In 1774, he named the Monsonia species of plants after her.

The 2015 Vondeling Monsonia is a blend of 85% Shiraz, 6 % Mourvédre, 5% Grenache & 4% Carignan. It spent 18 months in 500 litre French oak barrels.

Julian's Final Newsletter of 2017

Greetings from a rather hot Voor Paardeberg

As I write with the air con drumming away, we are in the midst of a mini heatwave, 40 C today, but thankfully predicted to be back to 25 C on Saturday. Life here on Vondeling has been very busy in the last 4 weeks, with masses of orders going out every day, as restaurants and retailers stock up for the Christmas avalanche. If you try and book a table in any of the top restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands over the holidays now, they are virtually all booked out. I am reliably informed the same goes for Durban and Plettenburg Bay as well. I am pleased to report that you should find Vondeling wines in most of these establishments.

Also we had a terrific evening on 20th November when Bridget, my wife, held a fund raising dinner for the Drakensburg Boys Choir School. It was an absolute sell out and while guests sat down to a 3 course dinner accompanied by delicious Vondeling wines, the boys sang absolutely beautifully. Along with the Vienna Boys Choir School and the Westminster Cathedral Boys School Choir they are regarded as the best in the world! In their 50 year history the “Drakkies” have sung in the Vatican, the White house, Westminster Palace (for the Queen), Nelson Mandela and Vondeling!

Julian's October Newsletter

Greetings from Vondeling

October has been rather a challenging month. All the vineyards are going bonkers and exploding with life and the chardonnay is flowering already. Everything looking good at this stage although the Shiraz has got off to a bit of an uneven start. Poor old Felix, one of our Aberdeen Angus bulls, twisted his knee ligaments “on the job”and the vet said he would have to be “off games” for the rest of the season, so that rather sealed his fate. He had a good life. Our other bull, Jack, was of course delighted to see Felix go and now has all 50 cows to himself. We have harvested the oat hay and about to cut the wheat which looks great. See picture below.

Julian's September Newsletter

Hello Again from Vondeling

As I write to you, it is the most beautiful spring day and everything is budding and blooming like crazy. It is a balmy 26C, but winter is officially over and the rainfall has been miserable. We have had another busy month. September is traditionally a hectic time for sales and marketing. Here in South Africa Hotels and restaurants are gearing up for summer and tourist season. And in Europe, summer holidays are over, schools are starting and everyone is going back to work….most importantly wine buyers!

Gold Medal in the 2017 Gold Wine Awards

We’re delighted that our 2017 Vondeling Rosé has already picked up a Gold Medal in the 2017 Gold Wine Awards.

The Gold Wine Awards are judged by wine enthusiasts under the watchful eye of the Cape Wine Academy. The focus of the competition is excellent value and as such, all wines judged were under R110 per bottle.

The tasting is conducted blind and the results are audited.

Congratulations to Matthew Copeland and the winemaking team!
